Hello! Welcome Back! This blog will wrap up my lead practice sessions that I was showing you guys. I'll be showing my last practice lead that I did, which is a Compare & Contrast Lead.
Refresher: A Compare & Contrast Lead compares or contrasts ideas.
I created my Compare & Contrast Lead based off of this paragraph below:
A study at the University of Michigan shatters some myths. The results were announced today. Women have a reputation for gossiping and talking, yet the study found the reputation is undeserved. The study, which required researchers to observe a number of people at work, found that women work both longer and harder than men—that men spend more time goofing off on the job. The study found that the average employed man spends 52 minutes, or 11 percent of each working day, not working: in scheduled coffee breaks, unscheduled rest breaks, at lunch beyond the normal hour and so forth. The average working woman spends only 35 minutes, or 8 percent of her working day, in such scheduled and unscheduled rest breaks. The same study found that the amount of effort expended by women at work is 112 percent that of men. The discrepancy is more dramatic than the statistics indicate because men earn more than women for the same type of work. The average man in the study earned $13 an hour, compared to 9.34 for the average woman. The women tended to hold mainly clerical jobs, but those in managerial positions also outperformed their male counterparts.
My Compare & Contrast Lead:
Women are known for gossiping, talking, and spreading rumors in their workplace. They are seen as not being on task and goofing off on the job. These negative views of women are now looked at in a different light due to an investigation done by the University of Michigan. The reputation is unwarranted, according to the study. Researchers had to observe several people at work for the study, which revealed that women put in more time and work harder than men, who instead spend more time wasting away at work. According to the survey, the typical working male wastes 52 minutes, or 11% of each working day, doing nothing. On the other hand, the typical working woman takes just 35 minutes, or 8% of her workday, for planned and unplanned breaks. The same survey discovered that women put in 112 percent more effort at work than males do. Men and women earn different amounts for doing the same type of labor, therefore the disparity is more pronounced than the statistics would suggest. In the research, the typical guy made $13 per hour, while the typical woman made $9.
I'm not going to act like this was the easiest lead ever. I kind of struggled with the Compare & Contrast lead, but I chose this factsheet paragraph to create my lead due to the paragraph already comparing & contrasting two ideas. The ideas were about which gender works harder in the workplace and they were also weighing both behaviors of men and women while at work. I tried to use keywords such as "On the other hand" to show that I was comparing and looking at both sides of the spectrum. I basically just talked about the past views on how women were basically looked at as slackers and I contrasted the difference between women behaviors on the job and men behaviors. With this comparison/contrasting that I observed, I put women in a better spotlight and showed why women are the better workers.
This concludes my Lead Blog Series that I've been doing. Onto the next aspects for my magazine!
